Plant spacing
calculator

A little space. A clearer planting plan.

Count plant centres from your bed dimensions,
entered spacing and chosen row pattern.

Your bed and spacing

32 positions

4 rows × 8 centres · 12 in row spacing

6 in minimum centre-to-edge margin

Dots are plant centres, not mature plant size. Spacing is entered, not a species recommendation.

One rectangular bed; paths, obstacles and multiple plant sizes are not modeled.

How it works

Measure the bed

Measure the inside bed width
and length in the same units.

Choose spacing and margin

Enter centre spacing and
minimum centre-to-edge margin.

Count fixed positions

Count the actual bounded centres
in your chosen row pattern.

Worked example

8 × 4 ft = 96 × 48 in

Measure the inside of the bed

12 in centres · 6 in margin

Square grid

8 columns × 4 rows = 32

Questions, Answered.

Does triangular spacing always fit more?

No. Counts depend on bed bounds, edge margins and the anchored pattern.
Example: 8 × 4 ft, 12 in spacing, 6 in margin → 32 grid or 30 triangular.

Does this choose species spacing?

No. Enter the centre spacing appropriate to the plants you choose, using their stated requirements.

Can I include paths or obstacles?

This model uses one rectangular bed and one spacing rule. Paths, obstacles, multiple plant sizes and succession timing are not modeled.

Are dots the mature plant size?

No. Dots mark plant centres, not mature plant spread or root-zone size.
